I found your blog when I typed "bassoon" into Technorati's search engine.

I'll admit to being a bassoonist.

It's dangerous to get me talking about the bassoon, because I don't know when to stop once I've started! Nevertheless, I hope you don't mind if I comment a little bit on my instrument!

Fox is a very popular make of bassoon in the U.S. Heckel is considered to be the best you can buy by many bassoonists these days. Another great brand which is starting to get attention in the U.S. is the Moosmann bassoon, which is the brand I actually own. I don't know too much about the Kroner brand of bassoons.

There are two types of bassoons: the bassoon (of course), and the contrabassoon, which plays an octave lower than the bassoon.

The bassoon reads bass clef, as well as tenor clef, and occasionally treble clef when it's asked to play very high in its range.

The bassoon uses a double reed, just like the oboe and English Horn.

You can play the bassoon sitting down, like when you're playing in an orchestra. You can also use a neck strap or harness to play it standing up for solo performances.

The bassoon does play low (the contrabassoon plays really low), but it can also play quite high. Not a lot of people realize it can play high, and therefore don't recognize it when they hear it. Listen to the soundtrack to the movie March of the Penguins to hear a high solo. You can also hear it up high by listening to the very beginning of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring.

Well, I've gone and said too much. Hope you found the comments interesting.
